What is standard form?
Standard form is a compact way to write very large or very small numbers using powers of ten. In school mathematics it is usually written as a x 10^n, where the first number is at least 1 and less than 10, and n is an integer. Large numbers use positive powers, such as 4.5 x 10^6 for 4,500,000. Small decimals use negative powers, such as 3.6 x 10^-4 for 0.00036. Students usually make mistakes in two places: moving the decimal point the wrong direction, or leaving the first number outside the required range from 1 up to but not including 10. A good worksheet should show both directions: ordinary number to standard form and standard form back to ordinary number. For large numbers, the power of ten counts how many places the decimal moves left. For small decimals, the negative power counts how many places it moves right.
